Restorative Justice for student to student sexual harm in schools
Proposal Summary
Support a partnership between the Open Circle (Centre for innovative justice) and the specialist sexual assault sector to be able to provide restorative justice for sexual harm in schools.
A significant proportion of sexual harm experienced by children and young people is by other children and young people, in schools and online. Many of the children and young people causing sexual harm, have themselves experienced sexual or family violence or other adverse child events. We need to be able to respond appropriately in a non-criminal way to enable both students to continue their education safely. Schools and teachers often are not equipped to deal appropriately or in a trauma informed or sexual violence informed way. Normally in these cases, one student ends up leaving the school. Open Circle currently offers Restorative Justice for HSB but can only currently work with HSB within families. A partnership between the SSAS and Open Circle could meet this need.
